Blue Picardy Spaniel Dog Breed Characteristics

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a rare breed of dog hailing from France. With their lustrous blue-grey coats and peaceful temperaments, these pups have captivated the hearts of many. Though relatively unknown outside of France, the Picardy Spaniel is steadily gaining popularity across the globe.

Origins of the Blue Picardy Spaniel

The Blue Picardy Spaniel has a fascinating history. They originated in the Picardy region of France, where they were bred as hunting dogs. It is believed they descended from English Setters and local French spaniels.

By the early 20th century, the Picardy Spaniel had become quite rare. After World Wars I and II, their numbers dwindled dangerously low. However, an effort was made to revive the breed by crossing them with Blue Belton English Setters. This infusion of new blood resurrected the Picardy Spaniel, resulting in the Blue Picardy Spaniels we know today.

Appearance and Coat of the Blue Picardy Spaniel

One of the most defining features of the Blue Picardy Spaniel is its lush, blue-grey coat. This is where the name “Blue” Picardy comes from. Their coats are a mix of black and grey hairs with a distinct bluish sheen.

These dogs have medium-length, slightly wavy fur. Their ears have light feathering, and they have some hair on their legs and belly. Their expressive eyes are a warm hazel or amber color.

Blue Picardy Spaniels are medium-sized dogs. Males stand 22-24 inches tall, while females are around 21-23 inches. They weigh in around 45-55 pounds when fully grown.

Temperament of the Blue Picardy Spaniel

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is known for its calm, sensitive nature. Despite being bred as a gun dog, they are not extremely high energy or excitable.

Picardy Spaniels form very close bonds with their owners. They aim to please and enjoy being constantly around their people. This loyal breed does best in a home where they receive plenty of love, attention, and cuddles.

These dogs get along very well with children and other pets when properly socialized. Their sweet nature makes them a trustworthy family companion. However, they can be slightly reserved around strangers and benefit from early socialization.

Exercise Requirements for the Blue Picardy Spaniel

While energetic at times, the Picardy Spaniel has only moderate exercise needs. They are happy with around 60 minutes of activity per day.

Picardy Spaniels love going for walks, playing games of fetch, and venturing out on hikes. Since they have a strong hunting background, they also enjoy exploring and sniffing around outside.

These dogs adapt well to apartment or country living. However, they thrive most when they have regular access to a safely fenced yard.

Make sure to meet their exercise quotas each day, as under-stimulated Picardy Spaniels can become bored and frustrated. Mentally stimulating games such as obedience training and canine puzzle toys are also greatly enjoyed by this bright breed.

Grooming Needs of the Blue Picardy Spaniel

The Blue Picardy Spaniel has moderately high grooming requirements. Their medium-length coats require regular brushing to minimize tangles and prevent matting. Plan to brush them around 2-3 times per week.

Bathing is only needed every 1-2 months with this breed. Over-bathing can damage their coat’s waterproofing oils. Their floppy ears should be checked weekly for infection and cleaned as needed.

This breed sheds seasonally in the spring and fall. Extra brushing during shedding seasons will help contain all that loose fur. Their nails may require trimming every few weeks to keep them from cracking.

Many owners choose to clip their Picardy Spaniel in a retriever clip or a lion clip for easy care during the summer months. This helps prevent excessive heat and matting.

Training Techniques for the Blue Picardy Spaniel

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is an intelligent and sensitive breed. They respond best to positive reinforcement training techniques. Harsh corrections or punishment will cause them to shut down.

Socialization from an early age is imperative for this breed. Well-socialized Picardy Spaniels develop into well-rounded, stable adults. Expose your puppy to a wide variety of people, animals, places, and experiences.

Training should be kept upbeat and varied to hold their interest. Food rewards, toys, and praise help motivate this people-pleasing breed. Picardy Spaniels enjoy having a job to do and are eager to master new cues.

Patience is key when working with this sensitive dog. Never lose your temper or react in frustration. Remain calm and consistent, and your Picardy Spaniel will flourish.

Health and Lifespan of the Blue Picardy Spaniel

Thankfully, the Blue Picardy Spaniel is not prone to many hereditary health issues. However, there are a few conditions they can be susceptible to:

  • Ear infections: Their floppy ears trap moisture, increasing the risk of infection. Regular ear checks and cleaning is a must.
  • Hip dysplasia: This painful joint condition should be screened for in all breeding dogs.
  • Hypothyroidism: Low thyroid function leading to hair loss and skin problems. This is manageable with daily medication.

With proper care, the Blue Picardy Spaniel enjoys an average lifespan of 13-14 years. Keep up with routine vet visits, and this breed should remain healthy well into their senior years.

Finding a Blue Picardy Spaniel Puppy

The rarity of the Blue Picardy Spaniel can make finding a puppy challenging. There are very few breeders in North America.

Expect to be placed on a waitlist to obtain one of these prized pups. Breeders usually charge $1000-$2000 per puppy.

Be very selective when researching breeders. Look for those who focus on health, temperament, and breed preservation above all else. Avoid breeders who seem profit-focused or have multiple litters available.

Importing a Picardy Spaniel from France is also an option. Just be prepared to pay international shipping fees and meet all important import requirements.

Is the Blue Picardy Spaniel the Right Breed for You?

If you love sporting dogs but desire a more low-key companion, the Blue Picardy Spaniel could be perfect. Their petite size makes them ideal for smaller homes, yet they still retain great athleticism.

This breed thrives when they can be close to their beloved people. They soak up all the love and attention you can provide. If you work long hours away from home, a Picardy may suffer from separation anxiety.

Those with previous dog experience do best with this sensitive breed. If properly socialized and trained, the Picardy Spaniel develops into a delightful family pet. Their sweet, loyal nature can win over even the most seasoned dog lover.

Just be prepared for the grooming and exercise commitments this breed requires. If you can meet their needs, you’ll be rewarded with a lifetime canine companion of uncommon devotion.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel – An Underrated Gem

The magnificent Blue Picardy Spaniel flies under the radar with most dog lovers, but deserves more recognition. They boast stunning blue-grey coats, moderate exercise needs, and delightful dispositions. While their rarity makes obtaining one difficult, the effort pays off handsomely. The Picardy Spaniel attaches closely to family and lavishes love upon their special people. For an exceptional blend of beauty, athleticism, and affection, the Blue Picardy Spaniel shines.
